Tip #1 – Potty Training

19 Oct

I gotta admit, raising a puppy is not as easy as it looks. In fact, it’s pretty hard (really hard :/) πŸ™‚ . And potty training is the hardest too. This is one of the situations where I can’t say “It depends on what breed you own.” Sadly, that’s not true, but I’m sure you can solve your problems if you observe these “rules”:

1. First of all, you must be 100% sure, that you are ready for any surprise, and then buy your dog. There are also breeders who start potty training before you take it away, so if you don’t want all the responsibility. (It won’t help alot, but you can try)

2. Secondly, crate or confine your puppy, to make sure it doesn’t… do stuff somewhere else πŸ™‚ . It’s best if you can teach, or just tell other family members to do the same when they go outdoors.

3. If you choose to feed you puppy commercial dog food, feed it with dry, that will keep it’s tooth be more strong, and otherwise he or she can have stomach ache from the soft food.

4. Next step is to keep your puppy on a scedule that is in good timing for you as well, and always take it out on the same time – whether it pees or not – You have to make it clear, that you don’t have always time, and it’s now or 3 hours later. (The scedule is best if it’s 3 hours or more per day. Max 5)

5. A puppy needs lots of water, however, while you are potty training you must feed your dog at least 4 hours before bedtime, and remove his or hers water 2 hours before bedtime, so it won’t be “nervous” at night.

6. Take your puppy out after every meal, as well as the first thing in the morning, and the last thing at night
(of course you don’t have put on pijamas first, you can do that after πŸ™‚ ) Also every time he wakes up from a nap, after an active play session, and in the wee hours of the morning if you hear him moving around. Take him on a leash to the place you want him to “go” (inside the garden) – It will teach him to use that spot, and it will also teach him, that he can “go” even on a leash with you standing there. It can be important for the times you’re not at home with him.

7. This is a point that you have to take seriously whether it sounds goofy or not: You must not play with your dog while “business” πŸ™‚ . And now the most exhausting part of all: If it doesn’t go in about 10 minutes, take him back to it’s crate, wait 10-15 minutes, and then take him back to the potty again… I must warn you: It will be the most tiring and exhausting work… sometimes (when it’s cold, or at night…) at summer it’s better… πŸ™‚ When it goes, give him a treat, or play with him for a while. Wait a few minutes before you go inside (puppies sometimes don’t finish on the first time, so don’t go in, because then in three minutes it will want to go again, and that’s just tiring… πŸ™‚ )

8. And now… last but not least, keep your potty place clean, you must pick up it’s feces every time. You don’t like to step in it, and neither does he, or anyone else. (This might be a little disgusting, but if you don’t pick up it’s feces, it might eat it :/ )

Good luck for your new puppy, I hope these “rules” helped you (it definetly helped me) πŸ™‚ Look at the pictures below, and please write a comment of what you think πŸ˜€
